The 4th of July is when the American spirit – American pride – is always most alive. Every American celebrates his and his country’s independence by way of barbecue, parades, concerts, political speeches and spectacular fireworks. It is customary to display the star spangled banner as he proudly relishes his freedom and his rights as a citizen. As Founding Father John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail – “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” He may have gotten the date wrong, which resulted in confusion among historians, but he was definitely right that the independence from Great Britain would be honored with much pride and pageantry. Heck, not even dogs can resist the 4th of July celebrations! Look at these handsome dogs decked in their all-American attire. Word of caution, though, the 4th of July is also reportedĀ as that day of the year with the most number of dog disappearances.
